Literary Translation
Danish & Norwegian (and sometimes Swedish) to English
I spent the first half of my life in Canada, but I have travelled, studied and worked in the UK for the latest half, leaving me with a foot in both worlds. Since graduating from University College London with a distinction in Danish over a decade ago, I’ve been translating Scandinavian texts into English, everything from crime to literary fiction, children’s books to cookbooks and design guides to footballer bios.
As the chair of DELT (the association of Danish-English Literary Translators), I work tirelessly with a team of volunteers to promote Danish literature in translation. I’ve also served on the committee of the UK Translators Association and am a member of the Society of Authors.
Recent works include the co-translation of the Norwegian fantasy series, The Raven Rings, (Arctis Press), the co-translation of four short stories in Re-Imagining Sexual Harassment: Persepctives from the Nordic Region (Bristol University Press), and Beowulf: The Tragedy Of A Hero. A Reading (U Press, Copenhagen).
Prize nominations include the 2019 Dublin Literary Award for The Sixteen Trees of the Somme by Lars Mytting (also Waterstones Fiction Book of the Month in 2018) , and Vivian, longlisted for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation in 2020.

”Companions, translated with care and élan by Paul Russell Garrett, is not at all a gloomy work. Hesselholdt’s touch is light, even mocking, as much as her subject matter is grave. There is a dancing intelligence roaming free here, darting back and forth among ideas and sensations.
